Here is my detailed review of Earth4Energy. Does it live up to the hype? Find out below...

I am the typical kind of guy who is off to work by 7AM and is already at home by 6PM. After eating my dinner and playing a bit with my kids, my favorite past time is working on my solar system or wind turbine.

In the beginning days of my tinkering with solar and wind power, I'd helped setup a few systems here and there, and although I wasn't what you'd call a "super-expert" by any stretch, I think had learned at least enough to be proficient. I was getting an okay amount of power per day, and I had an energy auditor say that a job I had worked and designed most of was one of the best he had seen, which made me think I had pretty much figured things out.

I checked out this program a while back when I found out that a buddy I used to work with had used it too. I didn't tell him, but his work was what I would call the best system I've seen. When I took a look and did some of the simple stuff Earth4Energy mentions, like simple energy-saving tricks, I was quite honestly shocked at how much I'd missed in my previous work. I mean, I read a lot of books before I started this little journey that had taken me from nothing to 100% renewable energy at my own home, but I wish I'd seen this when I started. It was more than I was thinking I'd find. It helped me reclaim 190 watts of power that I would otherwise have wasted. That's nothing to sneeze at!

I had a chance to see what would happen when I was hired to oversee a system that was almost identical to the layout of my own house. I decided to do a carbon copy of my own system, but this time to do things the "right way", and incorporate the tactics from Earth4Energy.

I was amazed at how much better things turned out. I really mean - wow. His thermal capacity was higher and average power consumed from the same system (except for slightly newer PVs, but at the same rating) was much lower. I expected similar results, but not THAT much of a difference!

Here are the parts of the guide with brief infos on what’s on them:

1. The eBook - This is really where the meat of the package is. The sections I found really useful were:

  • A great explanation of how solar power systems all work together to create the energy that comes out the other end.  This includes a basic intro to the parts of the system that you'll need to understand to make it all work.  Some of these systems and their descriptions include:
    • The Kilowatt-hour meter.  This looks like a simple device, but the earth4energy guide will tell you why it is one of the most important pieces to have.
    • Inverters - How they work and why, along with a tip on how to find one for $10.
    • A VERY valuable tip to attain FREE SOLAR PANELS.  This one is where most of the savings occured for me personally.
    • How to wire solar cells yourself to save the cost of purchasing pre-built modules.
  • How to put together your own solar generator with low cost parts
  • How to build a wind generator on your own.  This section includes some handy tips, including:
    • The 5 things all wind turbines have in common, and why you should be careful not to pay too much when a manufacturer over-sells one of these, or tries to call it something by a fancy name, but it is really the same thing.
    • This section parallels my own on building wind turbines - even their blades.  Find out how to cut them for the absolute maximum efficiency.
  • Practical sizing requirements, so you know how to layout a system based on your own personal needs
  • Combinations of wiring, so you can learn the proper way to wire your systems without causing overloads.

2.  Videos - These are being updated daily, which is really cool, because the content is always evolving to remain fresh and current.  While there aren't a ton of videos yet, there is an excellent tutorial on building solar cells.  This shows you how to do it yourself by hand, rather than buying a module pre-made, which can save you loads.

3.  The CD - Everything above is available either to download form the site, or as a seperate CD, which I found handy to take with me to other computers I use.
