Renewable Energy Sources

Today, there is more and more focus on using renewable energy sources instead of those based on coal or oil. Renewable energy sources are those based on resources that will never run out.

Renewable energy sources can use used to run everything from transportation to electrical devices in homes or commercial buildings. The most common forms of renewable energy are those based on solar or wind power, although there are other options.

Wind turbines store the power of the wind in large wind farms or even residential wind turbines. Wind generators are best used in open, windy areas, but they can be installed anywhere that gets constant wind of at least 8 miles per hour. There is said to be enough wind power in the Great Plains area alone to more than provide enough electrical energy for the entire United States. Clearly, the potential for wind power is huge.

Solar power is another popular method of incorporating renewable energy sources into your home or business. Solar power collectors can be used to heat water for hot water tanks and pools. You can also install solar panels (also known as photovoltaic cells) on your rooftop to convert solar energy into electricity usable for powering any electrical appliance.

Solar panels do not function at night, so if you’re using solar power as your renewable energy source, you’ll need to combine it with other forms of power that can be used at night.  Hydroelectric power, using falling water to rotate huge turbines, is used on a very large scale to provide power to millions of homes and businesses. An excellent option when the water comes from natural sources, it can become an environmental nightmare when large swaths of land are flooded to create hydroelectric dams. Nevertheless, hydroelectric power represents one of the largest renewable energy sources.

There are still other renewable energy sources being utilized on a smaller scale. For example, geothermal power, which is heat energy captured underground as it escapes from the earth’s core, could potentially be used to heat water, create steam for powering turbines, or heat homes.  The technology to harness this energy is complex, but each year we come closer to this ability.

Another renewable energy source, wave and tidal power, harnesses the motion of waves to drive a generator. These work similarly to how wind turbines rotate using the wind; turbines are placed underwater to harness the energy of the waves.   Renewable energy sources are clean sources, that is, they do not emit harmful pollution that dirties the air and leads to global warming. By choosing renewable energy sources, you are showing your commitment to helping the environment and reduce your dependency on the power grid.

In many cases, renewable energy sources are used in conjunction with each other and with traditional power sources. Many power companies are even beginning to get their power from renewable energy sources, so you may be able to switch to sustainable sources without installing your own renewable power generators.  The solution for using renewable energy sources is not to choose a single form of power, but to use all of the available environmentally-friendly power options together.
